The blade is the most common type, Shinogi Zukuri, a design that dates back to the Heian period (794-1185) in Japan. This style became the standard for samurai swords due to its balance of sharpness and durability. The blade features a full-length bo-hi (fuller), a groove that reduces the weight of the sword while maintaining its structural integrity, making the sword incredibly fast and light at just 1.6 lbs.

While we generally do not recommend Shirasaya swords for cutting out of the box by inexperienced sword enthusiasts (as without a hand guard, there is a slight danger of the hand slipping onto the blade, and the wood is not reinforced and may split apart), this sword is perfect as a display piece. Shirasaya, meaning “white scabbard,” was traditionally used for storing blades when not in use, especially during times of peace in Japan, to protect them from the elements.

This sword can also serve as the foundation for a DIY remounting project (it can be stripped down and has one mekugi peg like a traditional katana), or just as a relatively inexpensive, but real carbon steel blade that you can use to experiment on – testing sword sharpening techniques and polishing before attempting it on a more expensive blade.
